Restaurants in Gosport
Where to eat out across the borough
Gosport's restaurant scene is modest compared to neighbouring Portsmouth, but the borough has a decent spread of places to eat if you know where to look.
The town centre offers the most concentrated choice. The High Street and the streets immediately around it have a mix of Indian, Chinese, and Italian restaurants alongside fish and chip shops and kebab houses. The Alverbank Hotel on Stokes Bay Road is probably the most established dining venue in the borough, set in a Victorian villa with views towards the Solent. It serves a varied menu and is popular for Sunday lunches and special occasions. Booking is advisable at weekends.
Alverstoke has a few options around the village centre, including the India Cottage on Stoke Road, which has been serving the area for years and has a loyal local following. The village pub, the Anglesey Arms, serves food in a traditional setting.
Along the waterfront at Stokes Bay, the seasonal cafes serve straightforward food, mainly aimed at beachgoers and dog walkers. These are more cafe than restaurant, but they fill a gap in summer when the bay is busy. The Gillkicker on the seafront has become a popular spot for casual dining with a view.
Hardway has the Jolly Roger pub on Priory Road, which serves standard pub food in a waterfront setting. The harbour views from the outdoor seating are among the best in Gosport, which compensates for the simplicity of the menu.
For something different, Forton Road has a diverse selection of restaurants and takeaways reflecting the multicultural character of that part of the borough. Turkish, Polish, and South Asian options sit alongside more traditional British fare.
Gosport does not have a fine dining scene. What it does have is a collection of honest, reasonably priced places where the food is decent and the settings, particularly along the waterfront and at Stokes Bay, add genuine appeal. Residents looking for a wider choice of restaurants tend to cross on the ferry to Portsmouth, where Gunwharf Quays and Southsea offer more variety. The four-minute ferry crossing makes this a practical option for an evening out.
Delivery services now cover most of the borough, and the main apps list the majority of Gosport's takeaways and restaurants.
