HMS Sultan Established as Naval Training Base

1905

HMS Sultan was established in 1905 on the western side of Gosport as a naval training facility, originally focusing on engineering skills for the increasingly mechanised Royal Navy. The base occupies a large site between Forton and Rowner, and its presence has been a defining feature of that part of the borough for well over a century. The base trained generations of marine engineers, artificers, and technicians responsible for maintaining the complex machinery of warships. During both World Wars, the pace of training at Sultan intensified as the Navy expanded rapidly. The base adapted over the decades to reflect changing technology, from coal-fired boilers to gas turbines and nuclear propulsion systems. HMS Sultan became the Royal Navy's principal marine engineering training establishment, a role it continues to perform today. The base is one of the largest employers in the borough and its service personnel form a significant part of the local population. Naval families have lived in the surrounding housing estates, particularly in Rowner, since the estate was built in the 1950s. The base has a substantial physical presence, with training workshops, classrooms, accommodation blocks, and parade grounds visible from the surrounding roads.

Context

The early twentieth century saw the Royal Navy's transition from sail to steam and then to oil-fired propulsion, requiring a vastly expanded training infrastructure.

Impact

HMS Sultan has been one of the borough's largest employers and most significant institutions for over a century, deeply intertwined with local life.
