Elson
A large residential area in northern Gosport, with affordable housing, harbourside footpaths, and proximity to the Explosion Museum at Priddy's Hard.
Elson is the main residential area in the northern part of the Gosport peninsula, stretching from the harbour shore on the east to the Fareham boundary on the west. It is primarily a twentieth-century development, with large council-built estates from the 1930s through to the 1960s, supplemented by private housing and more recent infill. Elson Road is the principal route through the area, running north from the town centre towards the A32 and the road out to Fareham. The housing is a mix of semi-detached houses, terraces, and some bungalows, generally functional and unpretentious. Elson has its own parade of shops, a post office, and several takeaways along Elson Road, providing everyday conveniences without the need to travel to the town centre. Leesland Church of England Primary School and Elson Primary School serve the neighbourhood's families. The area includes sections of harbourside land with footpaths along the shore, offering views across to the naval dockyards and the harbour traffic. Priddy's Hard, a former naval armaments depot on the harbour edge, has been partly redeveloped as a heritage site and residential area, and its proximity gives Elson an interesting historical layer. The Explosion Museum of Naval Firepower, housed in the old magazine buildings at Priddy's Hard, is one of Gosport's visitor attractions and sits on the Elson boundary. The area is honest, working Gosport, without pretension. Property prices are among the most affordable in the borough, making it attractive to first-time buyers and young families. The bus services along Elson Road provide regular links to the town centre, ferry, and onward connections.
