Hardway

A compact harbour-side neighbourhood with working waterfront heritage, slipways, boat yards, and uninterrupted views across Portsmouth Harbour.

Hardway is a waterfront neighbourhood on the western shore of Portsmouth Harbour, roughly a mile north of the town centre. The name derives from the 'hard way', the paved slipway that provided a firm landing point on the muddy foreshore. Hardway has been a working waterfront for centuries, and the hard itself remains in use, with small boats pulled up on the shore and a slipway used by local sailing and rowing clubs. The area has a strong maritime character, with terraced houses and cottages running down to the harbour edge. Priory Road and Dodd Lane are the main residential streets, and the Jolly Roger pub on Priory Road is the local. The harbour views from Hardway are among the best in Gosport, looking directly across to Priddy's Hard and the wider harbour towards Portchester and Fareham Creek. The boatyard at Hardway has repaired and maintained vessels for generations, and a few marine businesses still operate from the waterfront. It is a compact, tight-knit neighbourhood with a distinct identity, somewhat separate from the rest of Gosport in feel. The housing is a mix of period terraces, some quite modest, alongside newer developments that have filled former industrial sites. Hardway Sailing Club runs dinghy racing and social events from its base on the waterfront. The neighbourhood has a loyal local following among residents who value the harbour views, the community atmosphere, and the proximity to the water. It lacks the grand architecture of Alverstoke or the commercial facilities of the town centre, but compensates with authentic waterfront character.
