Green spaces, recreation grounds, and country parks

Gosport has a reasonable amount of green space for a densely built-up urban area, with parks, recreation grounds, and a country park serving different parts of the borough.

Walpole Park is the principal formal park, situated in the Anglesey area with Anglesey Lake as its centrepiece. The park has well-maintained paths, flower beds, a children's play area, and open grass for informal recreation. The lake attracts swans, ducks, and other wildfowl, and a path circuits the entire perimeter. The park extends towards the harbour, connecting to the Millennium Promenade. It is the most popular park in the borough for casual walking, jogging, and family visits.

Stokes Bay recreation ground, the wide strip of grass behind the beach, serves as both a park and a beachside amenity. It includes a pitch-and-putt course, a children's play area, and open space for ball games and picnics. In summer, the recreation ground is one of the busiest outdoor spaces in the borough.

Alver Valley Country Park is the largest green space, covering extensive grassland, woodland, and wetland on the western side of the borough. The park was created on former military and agricultural land and provides walking routes, wildlife habitats, and a sense of open countryside within the urban area. Access is from the Rowner estate and from the Lee-on-the-Solent side. The park is managed by Gosport Borough Council and has seen gradual improvement in paths and facilities.

Falkland Gardens, a small park near the town centre, provides a green space within walking distance of the High Street and bus station. It is used for lunchtime sitting and occasional community events.

Crescent Gardens in Alverstoke is a small but attractive park near the village centre, with mature planting and a pleasant atmosphere.

Recreation grounds are distributed across the residential areas, providing sports pitches, play areas, and informal green space. Privett Park, home to Gosport Borough Football Club, is one of the more prominent. The Holbrook Recreation Centre on the edge of Rowner provides indoor sports facilities alongside outdoor pitches.

The Gosport peninsula is flat, which makes all the parks easy to access on foot or by bicycle. None involves significant gradients or difficult terrain.
