Weather in Gosport

Climate, seasons, and what to expect

Gosport benefits from a mild coastal climate, sitting on the south coast of England where the warming influence of the English Channel moderates temperatures year-round.

Summers are typically warm, with average high temperatures reaching 20 to 22 degrees Celsius in July and August. Heatwaves can push temperatures above 30 degrees, and the flat, exposed character of the peninsula means there is little natural shade on the seafront and beaches. The south-facing aspect of Stokes Bay makes it a sun trap on calm days.

Winters are mild compared to inland areas of Hampshire. Frost is relatively infrequent, and snow is rare, occurring perhaps once or twice a year and rarely settling for more than a day or two. Average winter temperatures hover between 4 and 8 degrees Celsius, and the harbour moderates extremes.

Rainfall is lower than the national average. The south Hampshire coast sits in one of the drier parts of England, receiving roughly 700 to 750mm of rain per year compared to the national average of about 1,150mm. Rain is spread fairly evenly through the year, with slightly wetter months in autumn and winter.

Wind is a significant factor in Gosport. The exposed peninsula position means that south-westerly winds, which predominate, can be strong, particularly along the Stokes Bay seafront and the harbour edge. The Solent acts as a funnel for wind, and conditions on the water can be rougher than they appear from shore. Sailors and water sports enthusiasts pay close attention to wind forecasts.

The coastal position also brings occasional fog, particularly in spring and early summer when warm air passes over cooler sea water. Harbour fog can disrupt the ferry service and reduce visibility along the waterfront.

For day-to-day weather information, the Met Office provides forecasts for the Gosport area. The BBC Weather page for Gosport gives a straightforward five-day outlook. Sailors and water sports users should check marine forecasts, which provide more detailed information about wind, waves, and tidal conditions in the Solent.
