The Borough Town on Portsmouth Harbour

Buses in Gosport

Bus routes, timetables, and the Eclipse busway

Buses are the main form of public transport within Gosport and for connections to Fareham and the wider area. The bus station on South Street in the town centre serves as the main hub.

First Bus operates the majority of services in the borough. Routes connect the town centre to the residential areas including Rowner, Bridgemary, Elson, Lee-on-the-Solent, and Alverstoke. The frequency varies by route, with the busiest services running every ten to fifteen minutes during the day and less frequently in the evenings and at weekends.

The Eclipse busway is the most significant route, running between Gosport town centre and Fareham along a dedicated busway that uses part of the former railway line. The Eclipse service provides a fast, frequent connection between the two towns, avoiding much of the road congestion that can affect the A32. From Fareham, passengers can connect to the railway for services to London, Southampton, and Portsmouth. The Eclipse runs at regular intervals throughout the day and has been one of the more successful bus rapid transit projects in the country.

Local routes within the borough serve schools, shopping areas, and the main residential estates. Route 9 connects the town centre to Lee-on-the-Solent via Alverstoke and the western part of the peninsula. Routes to Bridgemary and the northern estates use Elson Road and the A32 corridor.

Fares are standard for the south Hampshire area. Day tickets, weekly passes, and contactless payment are available. Concessionary travel passes (bus passes for over-65s and eligible disabled passengers) are accepted on all services.

Bus stops are distributed across the borough, and most residential areas have a stop within a few minutes' walk. Real-time information screens are provided at the bus station and some major stops. Timetable information is available through the First Bus app and website.

The main limitation of the bus network is evening and Sunday service, which is reduced compared to weekday provision. Late-night services are limited, which can be an issue for residents returning from evenings out in Portsmouth or Fareham.
