The Borough Town on Portsmouth Harbour

Getting to Gosport

How to reach the borough by road, bus, ferry, and rail

Gosport sits on a peninsula on the western shore of Portsmouth Harbour, and its geography means there is only one road in and out. This shapes how everyone gets to and from the town.

By road, the A32 is the sole route, running south from junction 11 of the M27 through Fareham and down the peninsula to Gosport town centre. The journey from the motorway takes roughly twenty minutes in light traffic, but can take considerably longer during rush hour. The single-road access is the most persistent infrastructure complaint in the borough, and congestion on the A32 is a fact of daily life for car commuters.

By bus, the Eclipse busway provides the best public transport option from Fareham, running along a dedicated route that avoids the worst road congestion. The service is frequent during the day and connects to Fareham railway station, which provides rail services to London Waterloo (roughly ninety minutes), Southampton (twenty minutes), and Portsmouth (ten minutes).

The Gosport Ferry provides the pedestrian and cyclist link to Portsmouth. From the ferry, it is a short walk to Portsmouth Harbour railway station, with services across the south of England. This is the quickest route to Portsmouth, taking four minutes on the water compared to the road detour around the harbour.

Gosport has no railway station. The line closed in 1953, and despite periodic campaigns for reinstatement, there is no current plan to restore rail services. The Eclipse busway uses part of the former railway alignment as a partial substitute.

Cyclists can reach Gosport from Fareham via the cycle path that runs alongside the Eclipse busway and along sections of the former railway line. This provides a traffic-free route for much of the journey.

SatNav users heading to Gosport should be aware that the A32 is the only practical road route. Alternative routes through residential areas of Fareham and Bridgemary can seem tempting but rarely save time.

The nearest airport is Southampton, approximately thirty miles west. Gatwick and Heathrow are both accessible via the M27 and M3, typically taking between ninety minutes and two hours by car.
