Military Road

Street guide, Gosport

Military Road runs along the northern edge of HMS Sultan, the Royal Navy's marine engineering training establishment. The road takes its name from the military presence that has defined this part of Gosport for over a century. It connects the Forton area to the Brockhurst and Rowner districts, skirting the perimeter fence of the naval base. The road is functional rather than scenic, with military fencing on one side and a mix of residential and commercial properties on the other. It carries a reasonable volume of traffic, particularly at shift change times when personnel enter and leave HMS Sultan. The former railway line crosses Military Road, and the cycle path that has replaced the track provides a useful off-road route.
