The Borough Town on Portsmouth Harbour

High Street

Street guide, Gosport

Gosport High Street runs from the waterfront and ferry terminal northward through the town centre, forming the borough's principal commercial thoroughfare. The street has been the main shopping area since the eighteenth century, when Gosport grew as a garrison and victualling town serving Portsmouth. The lower end near the harbour retains some older buildings, including Trinity Church (1696), while the upper section has been partly pedestrianised. The Discovery Centre, opened in 2012, anchors the waterfront end. The street has a mix of independent shops, chain stores, charity shops, and food outlets, reflecting the challenges facing secondary high streets across the country. Market stalls appear periodically. It remains the civic and commercial heart of the borough.
