The Borough Town on Portsmouth Harbour

Ferryboat Lane

Street guide, Gosport

Ferryboat Lane leads from the town centre down towards the ferry terminal and the harbour edge. The name reflects the lane's historical function as the route taken by passengers heading to the ferry crossing to Portsmouth. The Gosport ferry has operated in some form since medieval times, and this lane has been the pedestrian approach for much of that history. Today, the lane is a short walk from the High Street to the modern ferry pontoon, used daily by commuters and visitors making the crossing to Portsmouth Harbour station and the Historic Dockyard. The lane has a few shops and cafes catering to ferry passengers. It is one of the most frequently walked routes in the borough.
