The Borough Town on Portsmouth Harbour

Town Centre

The commercial and civic core of the borough, linking the High Street shopping precinct to the harbour waterfront and ferry terminal.

Gosport Town Centre is the commercial and civic heart of the borough, centred on the High Street and the pedestrianised precinct that runs from the bus station down to the waterfront. The High Street has been the principal shopping thoroughfare since the town's growth in the eighteenth century, though its character has shifted considerably over the decades. The covered shopping area around the old market site provides shelter for a mix of independent shops, charity retailers, and the remaining chain outlets. Gosport Borough Council's offices sit just off the High Street, and the town's main library, the Discovery Centre on the waterfront, anchors the southern end of the centre. The bus station on South Street serves as the main public transport hub, with routes radiating out to Lee-on-the-Solent, Fareham, and the residential estates. The Gosport ferry terminal sits at the foot of the High Street, providing the pedestrian crossing to Portsmouth Harbour station and the Historic Dockyard. This ferry link has been Gosport's lifeline for centuries, connecting the town to the wider world without the long road detour around the top of the harbour. Trinity Church on the High Street dates from 1696 and is the town's principal Anglican church, built to serve the growing naval community. The town centre has faced the same pressures as many secondary high streets across the country, with rising vacancy rates and competition from online retail. However, regeneration efforts have focused on the waterfront area, and the Discovery Centre, which opened in 2012, brought the library, museum, and community facilities into a modern building overlooking the harbour. Market stalls appear on the High Street periodically, and the area around Falkland Gardens provides green space close to the shopping precinct. For everyday needs, the town centre remains the most convenient place in the borough, with banks, post offices, pharmacies, and food shops concentrated within walking distance.
