The Borough Town on Portsmouth Harbour

Lifeboat Lane

Street guide, Gosport

Lifeboat Lane is a narrow lane near the waterfront in the town centre area, taking its name from the former lifeboat station that served Gosport and the harbour approaches. The lane is short and largely residential, but its position close to the harbour gives it historical interest. The old lifeboat house has been converted for other uses. The lane connects to the harbour-edge footpaths and provides an alternative pedestrian route between the town centre and the waterfront. It is one of several small lanes and alleys in the old town that reflect the medieval and early modern layout of the settlement, before the wider streets of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were constructed.
